Ditch the Resolutions & Get Results

Updated: Dec 28, 2019

The new year is here, and you've set weight loss goals and health resolutions like so many of us have done in years past. You’re motivated. You’ve got new sneakers, and a few new gym outfits. You’re ready to drop the weight, snatch the waist, and kill Hot Girl Summer for real for real this time, RIGHT? But what if I told you there’s more to achieving the results than starting with a resolution?

A resolution, as defined by Mearriam Webster, is a firm decision to do or not to do something. But according to U.S News and World Report, 80% of Americans give up on their new year's resolutions by mid February. As a fitness coach and trainer that has helped countless women transform their bodies, mindsets, and lives through physical activity and proper nutrition, I know first hand that resolutions quickly fade by mid February. Many of us lose momentum because we cut certain foods and food groups from our diets abruptly. These sudden, drastic changes are NOT sustainable. We also don’t reach our New Year's resolutions because when the motivation wears off, which it most certainly will, our resolution becomes a thing of the past or something we put on the back burner. BUT not you, NOT this year! You have already made the resolution. Now all you need is what it takes to stick with it.

Resolutions are firm decisions, and those firm decisions need strategies.

There are three strategies in particular that will help you to be successful with your new year’s resolution.

#1 Create a SMART Goal

The first thing you need to do with your resolution, is to develop it into a SMART goal.

A SMART goal is a goal that is:

SPECIFIC: What EXACTLY do you want to accomplish? (lose 20lbs, drop 15% body fat, etc.)

MEASURABLE: How are you going to measure your progress? (scale, body fat composition test, body measurements)

ATTAINABLE: Set goals within your reach. (For example, an unrealistic expectation would be to lose 20lbs of fat in 30 days. This may cause you to become discouraged. Set goals that are attainable, yet challenging.)

RELEVANT: Based on your lifestyle, define your level of commitment to your goal. (How many days a week are you committing to physical activity, meal prep, etc.? This will help you stay on track to meet your goals.)

TIME - BASED or TIME-SENSITIVE: By when will you achieve this goal ? (June 1st? December 15th? Put a deadline on it, and check periodically to make sure that you are on track.)

#2 Support and Accountability

Find an accountability partner who has had proven success on their journey, join a community of people whose goals are similar to yours to help motivate and push you to reach your own goals, or hire a coach or fitness trainer to help you stay on track. Any or all of the aforementioned strategies of accountability will propel you towards your goal when utilized intentionally.

#3 Fun

I often say, “If fitness isn’t fun for you, you’re doing it wrong!” A part of making fitness your lifestyle and not just a resolution, is finding your fit. I encourage all of my clients, as well as people I meet in passing, to diversify their fitness regimes. TamB. Fitness offers a variety of group classes to assist in your quest. We offer everything from our Dance Cardio Party w/DJ Streetzz, Hip Hop Step, Spin, and Yoga, to, our most results driven, BootCamps. Fun is subjective,so find the fit that makes fitness fun to you. I personally invite you to try something different in the new year to break up the monotony of your everyday routine.

IF you are serious about 2020 not just being another year of failed weight loss attempts or health goals that you never accomplish, I encourage you to implement my proven coaching strategies. Creating a SMART goal, support and accountability, and making fitness fun can help you stay true to your resolution so you can finally achieve those health and fitness goals you start out with at the beginning of the year. By the time Hot Girl Summer rolls around, you will be ready for real for real this time!
